Class Assistants are the people during sessions/classes whose primary role is to assist the Educator(s) during their assigned class in Zoom. This occurs in various ways, some of which we list below:

• Monitoring the chat
• Reading questions from the chat when the Educator(s) has/have designated a time for questions
• Calling on individuals with raised hands when the Educator(s) has/have designated time for questions or comments
• Providing time reminders to the Educator(s)
• Sharing any handout or outline in the chat throughout the session
• Copying any resources and links from the Zoom Chat into the Discord Channel for the session

Class Assistants also introduce the Educator(s) from a set script and paste the designated portions of the script into the chat. Lastly, Class Assistants record a count of how many participants are present at the beginning, middle, and end of a session.

Extra Perks of this Role:

You’re able to join each session 10-15 minutes early to check in with the educator, giving you a unique chance to connect one-on-one, support their needs, and share a quick moment before things begin. It’s a great way to build rapport and earn a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the session and how educators do their work!

Experience Needed:

You do not need any prior experience with Zoom to be a Class Assistant, as long as you are willing to learn! Also, a KBtL Staff member (the Zoom Room Opener) will be present throughout the entirety of your shift, should you need assistance.

Communication & Accessibility:

• Being on camera is not required during the sessions themselves; though, we do ask you to be on camera initially to help get the Educator situated. If you are not comfortable with being on camera at all, even during non-recorded portions of the session, you will need to let the Director of Volunteers know ahead of time.
• Having your voice recorded is not always required; however, some educators may request you to read things out from the chat during their session. If you are not comfortable having your voice recorded or if the chat is inaccessible for you, you must let the Director of Volunteers or the Zoom Room Opener know ahead of time.

Neither of these circumstances inherently disqualify you from volunteering as a Class Assistant or Standby Volunteer; however, they may mean that you are a better fit for some classes rather than others.

Gather Greeters are the people who hang out in the Lobby in Gather - KBtL’s social space - interacting with and assisting individuals with navigating the platform. It is a Gather Greeter’s job to answer basic questions about Gather. As attendees join Gather, you should welcome them and inquire if they need any assistance. Be prepared to walk them through some basic Gather commands for navigation in case they require assistance with this. Lastly, Gather Greeters collect and record a count of how many participants are present in Gather during each session block.

Extra Perks of this Role:

Gather Greeters are able to meet and mingle with a wide range of attendees in a relaxed social setting, which is perfect for expanding your network and making new friends!

Experience Needed:

You do not need any prior experience with Gather to be a Gather Greeter, as long as you are willing to learn! Also, a KBtL Staff member (the Gather Supervisor) will be present throughout the entirety of your shift, should you need assistance.

Communication & Accessibility:

• The Gather platform and KBtL's Gather Space have some built-in accessibility features; however, the platform may not be accessible to all users. The platform has a 7.9 score on Wave (for blind/low vision access), if this helps you decide whether it is accessible to you or not. Being able to navigate the platform is a requirement for being a Gather Greeter.
• Being on camera is not necessarily required, but it is encouraged, as it may help attendees feel more comfortable approaching you in Gather. If you are not comfortable being on camera or don't have the technology to be on camera, please let the Director of Volunteers know ahead of time.
• Communicating through voice/audio is required for this position because attendees who are having trouble navigating Gather may also have trouble accessing the Chat box in Gather. Gather sessions are not recorded, so your voice will never be recorded. Please Note: Unfortunately, interpreters will not be available to interpret for you during Gather sessions or during your Gather Greeter shifts.
• Communicating through the chat is not necessarily required; however, please also note that there will be some designated "voices off" spaces in which participants are expected to only use the chat or non-spoken languages to communicate. So you will not be able to participate in conversations in this room if you are only communicating via audio/voice.

Not being on camera and not using the chat do not inherently disqualify you from being a Gather Greeter; however, unfortunately, not being on audio/voice does disqualify you from the role.

Standby Volunteers are the people during the conference whose primary role is to help the event run smoothly by stepping in wherever needed. This may include filling in as a Class Assistant or Gather Greeter during their shift or running slides for an educator during a session.

In case coverage is needed for a Classroom Assistant or Gather Greeter role during your shift, please familiarize yourself with the responsibilities of both of these roles as well as your role as a Standby Volunteer before the start of your shift.

When not covering another role, Standby Volunteers are expected to keep conversations flowing in the #general-chat and other Discord channels, answer questions posed by attendees or tag the On-Call Staff person if you do not know the answer yourself.

Standby Volunteers have the chance to sharpen their articulation and social skills and adapt quickly to changing needs - making it a great role for anyone looking to grow as a thoughtful, confident communicator. It’s also a great way to interact with conference attendees in the Discord server and to engage in meaningful conversations!

Experience Needed:

You do not need any prior experience with Discord, Zoom, or Gather to be a Standby Volunteer, as long as you are willing to learn! Also, a KBtL Staff member (the On Call Staff Person) will be present throughout the entirety of your shift, should you need assistance.

Communication & Accessibility:

Because Standby Volunteers must be prepared to step in as Class Assistant or Gather Greeter, if needed, the communication & accessibility sections from both of these roles apply to Standby Volunteers as well.

The Consent & Emotional Care (CEC) Team at KBtL exists to protect emotional and (to a smaller capacity) physical safety, handle sensitive issues respectfully, and promote a positive, caring community vibe. Consent and Emotional Care (CEC) Team members should be prepared to assist with any of the following:

• Supporting Consent Practices
• Responding to CEC Tickets in Discord
• Providing Emotional Support
• Mediating Conflicts
• Offering Resources
• Holding Space for People
• Educating & Reminding the community about consent culture and emotional safety guidelines

Extra Perks of this Role:

Consent & Emotional Care Team Members have the satisfaction of knowing that you helped keep KBtL a safe and welcoming space for everyone, even when processing difficult topics!

Experience Needed:

Unlike the other volunteer roles at KBtL, this role has some specific experience required! In order to be eligible to serve on the CEC team, you must be a returning KBtL Staff member or Volunteer. Additionally, you must have skills or training (whether free or paid for) in areas of Consent and/or Emotional Care.

Some examples of the necessary skills or training include:

• Counseling or therapy
• Communication
• Trained listening
• Incident response
• De-escalation
• Restorative justice
• Dungeon monitoring
• Social work
• Triage
• Crisis support
• Psychosocial rehabilitation
• Serving on in a similar role for another kink event in the past (depending on the event)

Other relevant experience or training is also considered! Essentially, we're looking for folks that have more than just "I'm a good listener," though also being a good listener would certainly help in the role.

Communication & Accessibility:

• Generally, the CEC team addresses tickets in the way that is most comfortable for the person opening the ticket. This means you may be asked to have a DM conversation, to have a voice call, or to have a video call. If you are not comfortable with one or more of these methods of communicating, you will need to let the Director of CEC know. Please Note: Unfortunately, interpreters will not be available to interpret for you during CEC conversations.
• CEC team members are expected to fill out a form after each ticket is resolved. If you need an accommodation in lieu of filling out the form, please let the Director of Consent & Emotional Care know ahead of time.

Neither of these circumstances inherently disqualify you from being a CEC Team Member.
